Music Literacy Classes
Students enrolled in Pre-Twinkle, Intermediate and Advanced String programs will be placed according to their age, playing and reading levels, into one of the following classes:
MUSIC ENRICHMENT:
For violinists, violists and cellists age 6 and under who have not yet begun to read music. Students will engage in activities that involve the whole body through singing, movement and improvising. Designed to enhance music literacy skills in an environment that encourages joy and personal success. This course is also offered to Pre-Twinkle enrollees opting for the 3-class schedule, and allows parents to attend the Parent Talks.
READY TO READ:
For students age 7 and older who have not yet begun reading music. This course is designed as an introduction into the "language of music" and is directed toward the student who is not yet ready to participate in an orchestra. Instruction will include basic fundamentals of music such as pitch and rhythm, and identification of musical symbols and notation.
ORCHESTRA:
Students in the Intermediate program already reading music at a basic level of accomplishment will be assigned to one of our three orchestras, according to their stated level of playing and reading. Advanced String Camp participants will perform in the ASC Orchestra.
NOTE: The above classes are scheduled so parents will be free to attend Parent Education Talks, which meet during the same hour.
Enrichment Classes for 5-Class Intermediate Program Participants
The New Mexico Suzuki Institute offers a variety of exciting enrichment classes. The 5 class schedule tuition includes your choice of one as listed below. Please indicate your priority (1st choice, 2nd choice, 3rd choice) on the registration form. Enrollment for each of these classes is limited and we may not be able to provide your first choice of enrichment class. Classes will meet Monday through Thursday during the week.
Brothers and sisters of students who are attending the Institute may register for any enrichment class on a space-available basis. Parents may register, too, however, classes should not interfere with parent's requirement to attend their child's classes. One hour each day, while students attend their Music Literacy class (Orchestra, Ready to Read or Orff), parents will be free to attend special sessions designed to interest and motivate them in the process of nurturing their child’s musical development. This year we offer our Storytime Enrichment class, which meets the same hour, as a place for parents to leave their young children in good hands, so they can attend these worthwhile lectures.

Their intent is to inspire and motivate other students, parents and teachers by demonstrating good posture, musicianship and careful study. Students of all levels will be considered. All students are invited to audition by sending a DVD or high quality webcast (eg. YouTube link). NOTE: additionally please e-mail exact URL address to director@nmsuzuki.org of a performance of a well polished and memorized piece with accompaniment if applicable. Audition recording without appropriate piano accompaniment will not be considered.
Application must be postmarked by May 31, 2011. DVD’s become the property of the New Mexico Suzuki Institute. Late applications cannot be accepted. To download an application click here. Please refer to complete instructions on the form when submitting your application and recording.
